Back to the issue. I'm not going to rehash all the talk around the Web on this subject. ZDNet offered a pretty good breakdown a few weeks ago, Google Office vs. Microsoft Office: What’s the end game?. But I do have some random thoughts, starting with the revelation that I bought the Google's enterprise edition last night for our business.

Still making the case for RSS

You would think we'd be past this by now. Not so. I still spend a lot of time explaining RSS to marketers and business professionals who need RSS, not only in their websites, but in their lives as well. VentureBlog, one of my long-time favorites, makes a pretty good case anyone can understand. "Without RSS There Would Be No VentureBlog."

Google Apps versus Microsoft Office (Part 1)

It's "official," Google's taking on Microsoft. Gmail and crew are now for "enterprises." Yeah, didn't see that one coming. What's it all mean? Likely, an easy path to Cramer's $600 target for GOOG. The Street has wanted more diversified revenue from Google, and now they'll get it. On the tech side, there's some debate. JBattelle is bullish on Google Apps, while ZDNet's Dignan not so.

Design your content, not your site

Garrett Dimon's new website is truly marvelous because it's not about the design, it's about the content. Unfortunately, we don't see too many business sites that follow this model. Clients just don't buy into this kind of thing. They want more flash, more sizzle, and we're not good enough to talk them out of their ill-conceived notions. At the end of the day, we're not really doing web design like Garrett did, we're doing "client design."

Managing websites with ExpressionEngine

In the CMS space, our specialty is with lightweight systems not as sophisticated or expensive as enterprise solutions from the likes of a Vignette or Interwoven. Our favorite is ExpressionEngine (EE) from pmachine.com. Others get more buzz, but we think the pmachine.com is just this determined underdog.
