Magento Upgrades by Sitesquad
Magento upgrades can be dubious, but we offer a pragmatic approach with sensible pricing. We focus on the core Magento codebase, vet upgrades on dev servers, first, and charge less if you're on a newer version.
A couple weeks ago we upgraded our Magento site and another one to 1.6.1. So we're down with 1.6.1, if you need an upgrade. As usual, we stumbled into some things. Enjoy.

What's Included with Magento Upgrades
- Kickoff Consultation
- Safe Staging Server Upgrade & Testing
- Troubleshooting
- Live Site Upgrade & Testing
- Fallback Contingency
Pragmatic Approach
- Focus
- To start, we focus on the core Magento codebase and database when it comes to upgrades. At least initially, we won't meddle with third-party extensions or customizations. Our goal is to get the Magento codebase and database operating in concert on the target version.
- Pricing
- What we can't predict is whether your site is ready for a flawless upgrade or what impact, if any, the upgrade will have on customizations or extensions. To start, we charge you as if the upgrade will be routine. If our upgrade attempts reveal otherwise, we'll assess the mending that needs to take place with extensions or customizations, and then quote that work.
- Process
- To play it safe, we'll execute the entire upgrade process on a staging server, first. It's time well spent. We won't upgrade a live site without having successfully upgraded the same site behind the scenes on a staging server. And we don't use Magento Connect for upgrades — an approach far from safe, in our opinion.
The Process
- Kickoff Consultation
- We'll initiate the effort with a conference call to discuss logistics and the circumstances of your store.
- Safe Staging Server Upgrade & Testing
- We'll create a staging site from a backup of your live site and attempt the upgrade there, first. We'll check to see if we can browse your catalog, add products to cart, check out and access the Magento admin. If so, we'll ask you to test.
- Troubleshooting & Analysis
- If the upgrade fails, we'll spend an hour troubleshooting to see if we can overcome the problems. If our troubleshooting fails to overcome the problems, we'll discuss with you the mending that may need to take place to complete the upgrade and provide a quote for that work.
- Live Site Upgrade & Testing
- Once you've approved our staging server upgrade is approved, we'll take another backup of your live site, take your live site down for "Maintenance" and then repeat our upgrade procedures on your site. We'll ask you to test the upgrade on your live site and, once approved, we'll re-open the store.
- Fallback Contingency
- If the upgrade attempt on your live site fails, we'll restore the site with the latest backup.
- Analysis
- We'll discuss with you why the upgrade may have failed and what our next steps may be.
